Description
The first BMW M5 marked a significant milestone for BMW M and set a new standard for high-performance sedans. The greatest asset of the E28 M5 is the M88/3 engine, derived from the legendary BMW supercar, the M1. BMW M replaced the M1’s Kugelfisher fuel injection with a Bosch Motronic system; the M5 now has a power output of 10 hp more. With two overhead camshafts, six individual throttle valves, and optimized digital engine electronics, the four-valve engine produces 286 hp at 6,500 rpm, 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 6.5 seconds, and a top speed of 245 km/h, making it among the fastest street-legal saloons of its time. These figures may seem modest by today’s standards, but the M5 surpassed the contemporary Ferrari 328 and its Tipo V8 engine in power; the M5’s high-performance figures and distinctive M88 exhaust note continue to excite automotive enthusiasts. The original M5 also featured a reinforced five-speed transmission, a rear axle differential lock with 25 percent locking effect, a stiffer sports suspension, and a high-performance braking system.
Like all the first-generation M-Powered sports cars, the E28 M5 is now a highly sought-after classic, valued for its rarity and special powerplant. Only 2,241 units of the E28 M5 were produced; it is believed that only 283 are right-hand drive models, and among those, only 187 are UK right-hand drive examples like the one shown here. This rare HK-registered example was originally from the UK. It is finished in a classic Diamantschwartz Metallic and is in well-preserved condition and excellent running order. It comes with tools and service books with over 20 years of period service stamps. The E28 M5 is exceptionally rare and unique in Hong Kong.
