Description

The first Civic to receive the Type R badge was introduced in 1997, as the EK9. It set a new benchmark in hot hatch performance. The EK9 shared many characteristics with the other Type R models, such as the omission of sound deadening and other weight-reduction measures. The Civic Type R features a hand-ported 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC B16B 4-cylinder engine, front-helical limited-slip differential, and a close-ratio 5-speed manual transmission.

The B16B engine boasted one of the highest power outputs per liter for a naturally aspirated engine, with 182 hp at 8,200 rpm and 160 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm, from a displacement of 1,595 cc. Performance figures include a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of approximately 6.8 seconds and a top speed of up to 225 km/h. A strategically seam-welded monocoque chassis was also used for the first time to improve chassis rigidity. The suspension layout consisted of double wishbones all round, and the ride height was significantly lowered. Shorter springs and stiffer dampers were joined by thicker anti-roll bars and strut braces at either end. The EK9 was equipped with the iconic 15-inch, seven-spoke alloy wheels finished in Championship White. The interior featured red Recaro bucket seats, red door cards, red Type R floor mats, a titanium shift knob, and a Momo leather-wrapped steering wheel.
