Description

Only 502 units of the highly limited 190 E Evolution I were ever produced. It was built to meet homologation requirements and racing regulations for the DTM, a German Touring Car Championship. Mercedes developed the 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution I as the foundation for its 1989 DTM cars, competing against the BMW M3 Sport Evolution.

Mercedes-Benz extensively upgraded the Evo I, reengineering the engine, brakes, and suspension, and adding a distinctive, functional body kit. Unlike many modern limited editions that focus on cosmetic updates, nearly every component of the Evo I was unique, requiring hand-built production of all 502 units.

As a hand-built model, the Evo I exemplified Mercedes-Benz quality and exclusivity. It features an upgraded aerodynamic package, enhanced engine, larger brakes, and bigger wheels to homologate these features for the 1989 DTM cars. Its special bodykit included side skirts, a splitter, and a large rear wing, reflecting the peak of 1980s and 1990s tuning. The Evo I is paired with a dogleg Getrag 5-speed manual gearbox as standard, and its 2.5-litre engine produced 205 horsepower, matching the standard 2.5 16V model. There is also a special in-cabin switch-enabled electronic ride-height adjustment for both track and road use, with the default setting 19mm lower than the non-Evo model.

This pristine, low-mileage example is imported from Japan and is in superb original condition. The 190 E Evolution I represented Mercedes-Benz’s first significant effort to develop a road car that closely reflected its motorsport ambition.
